DR. ROBERT ABEL, WAKARUSA HIGH, 1942
“Doc” played varsity baseball at Wakarusa, but he is being honored for his more than 45 years as a volunteer team physician-and community leader. He remains team physician for Jimtown as well as NorthWood and also had served its predecessors, Wakarusa and Nappanee. His biggest thrill is being associated with the many fine athletes through the decades; one highlight being on the sidelines in the Hoosier Dome with NorthWood and Jimtown football teams in the state championship games. The WWII veteran also has been on the Wa-Nee School Board for 34 years, the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Board 38 years and recently completed five years as president of the Indiana 4-H Foundation. He is, or has been, a member of many college boards, civic organizations, political committees, library boards, medical committees and “whereever I can help our great community and country.”
